The Mackay hairdressing & barber shear range— types, steel and sizing
One catch with a thin catalog is hidden specs; because we engineer every model in-house, each carries a documented 60–61 HRC and a smooth, razor edge, unlike a reseller who can only quote a price. That gap is the mistake a hair thinning scissors or hair shears buyer cannot afford.
Buyer beware: what you thought was a supplier’s “catalog” is actually just three models in a rebranded disguise with a secret mark-up, and no data for size or hardness-the error that delays many hair cutting scissors programs from leaving the premises before delivery. The catalog that runs beneath the premium MATSUOPRO brand covers the full working bench of a salon or barbershop — hairdressing and barber hair cutting scissors, thinning shears for blending and weight removal, texturizing and trimming shears, and the pet-grooming shears that so many distributors bundle together into the same order. We design all of our shears ourselves in-house, so each model includes a detailed grade specification and a smooth hand-honed edge (60-61 HRC). You won’t find that from a re-seller who only knows a price. The full matrix of professional hair scissors, japanese hair scissors and thinning scissors means an engineer on your team can align a specific model to a specific haircut style or to a request without extensive back-and-forth. The decision matrix is designed so you don’t have to wade through Yes/No feature charts – each type of shear shows you the recommended uses, steels, sizes, hardness and minimum order for your high-quality wholesale choice.

Any model can be made to left hand, with your choice of a swivel thumb, an offset thumb (for improved ergonomic comfort), and any of the blade finishes. Blade size, blade geometry and the number of teeth are detailed on each spec sheet so you can match a model to your request without a costly exchange after delivery. Standard scissor geometry follows the industry’s most popular designs, including the hollow ground, convex edge that’s the subject of many early patent filings (e.g. US 3,374,694 A).

The steel and edge that win you repeat orders
As professionals put it, steel quality is the most important factor, and real Japanese made scissors hold their edge longer because of process, not marketing. If the seller can only tell you the steel type and nothing about the heat treatment, that is a red flag. Our honest version: genuine japanese stainless steel, verified before it ships, whereas a marked-up brand hides how the blade was treated. That convex geometry we hand-hone traces to documented cutlery patents such as US 5,781,999 A for thinning shears.
Here’s the most poorly kept secret in the business, and not always the factor the retail price represents: A properly heat treated 440C shear will outlast a poorly heat treated VG10; a $600 rebranded shear often cuts no better than a well heat treated $40 pair. Steel quality is what professionals call the single biggest factor separating good from bad; poorly manufactured steel quickly loses its sharpness. Even so, the type of steel is just a starting point. Here is the truth: The level of edge retention on any tool is determined by the heat treatment process and how it is sharpened – and this is where the opaque supplier world, which we are committed to transparency, can hide things. A dealer that cannot give you information beyond steel grade, you may want to avoid. Genuine Japanese made scissors, as any professional would attest, are known to stay sharp, maintain perfect balance, and are built to last, thanks to years of development, not flashy marketing.
“We settled on vacuum treatment plus a cryogenic soak because it is the only combination that let us hold 440C and VG10 at 60–61 HRC across a whole production batch without warping the thin blade. Any factory can quote a steel grade — holding the hardness uniformly, blade after blade, is the part that takes the furnace and the 80 steps.”— Mackay Engineering Team, R&D
Precision Verified
And that is our entire point. We publish the full chain: every blade is vacuum heat-treated and cryogenically tempered, which converts retained austenite to martensite and lets us hold a uniform 60–61 HRC across our 440C and VG10 lines and up to 64 HRC on the cobalt flagship. Every premium blade passes through 80+ individual steps, is CNC-cut for repeatable geometry, then hand-honed by our craftsmen to a Japanese convex edge and mirror polish.
A convex edge is the sharpest, smoothest geometry a shear can carry; it glides for slide and point cutting where a cheaper flat bevel catches and pushes the hair. Each Rockwell C figure we quote is confirmed on our own benches before a pair ships. We hold every blade to a Convex-Edge Verification Standard: each pair is checked by hand for a true convex geometry and a smooth, high-quality mirror finish, cut from genuine japanese stainless steel rather than softer Chinese-sourced stock.
The Six-Steel Buyer-Fit Index
It is important that you are given not just the steel, but also the appropriate level of edge-care it requires, based on its Rockwell C value and edge behavior. It lets you set up a good/better/best hierarchy.
| Steel grade | Hardness | Edge retention | Corrosion | Resharpen | Cost tier | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9Cr (entry) | 56–58 HRC | Moderate | Good | Easy | $ | Training / back-bar / budget lines |
| Japanese 440C | 60–61 HRC | Good | Very good | Easy | $$ | Everyday salon & barber workhorses |
| VG10 | 60–62 HRC | High | Very good | Moderate | $$$ | Premium daily drivers, slide cutting |
| ATS-314 (Hitachi) | 60–62 HRC | High | Very good | Moderate | $$$ | Premium lines needing toughness |
| Cobalt alloy | up to 64 HRC | Highest | Good | Harder | $$$$ | High-volume pros, longest edge life |
| Damascus (VG10 core) | 61 HRC | High | Very good | Moderate | $$$$ | Retail hero / brand statement pieces |
Why cryogenic tempering matters for a thin blade
Cryogenic treatment after hardening converts retained austenite to martensite, which raises attainable hardness and edge stability. On a thin, precision-ground hair blade, that gives a longer-lasting edge holding through more haircuts before re-sharpening — the difference between a stylist honing monthly versus bi-weekly.
Request a spec sheet & free sample →OEM / ODM & private label — your brand, our factory
Most “custom” programs make the same mistake: they stop at the sticker. Because we cut at the level of the steel, an OEM buyer gets a documented spec, unlike a logo-on-stock reseller — the reason our 50-piece minimum still ships a verifiable blade. For buyers registering their own mark, we support the USPTO trademark process with the documentation you need.
“Brand owners and distributors want custom scissors with an OEM program — and often their biggest concern is that ‘custom’ merely means a label on a standard pair, that the minimum is unattainable, or that the factory will pass off lesser-quality shears than those that were shown in the sample. Our OEM program alleviates all of those concerns. Since we have in-house control over our entire process-from melting to finishing-we can customize everything from the steel grade (from 9Cr to cobalt), to handle style (offset, crane or swivel), to color, custom laser etching for the logo, and retail-ready packaging, to your specific requirements.
For the full breakdown of custom steel, handle and engraving options, see our dedicated custom hair scissors & logo-engraving service. Unlike many ‘custom’ brands who simply place a sticker, we let you custom-build every pair at the steel level, and our 50-piece minimum can be verified on a physical sample.

What drives your quoted price
Four factors influence a wholesale price: steel type(9Cr-steel to Cobalt-steel), volume in the range, extent of customization (from basic finishing to custom packaging and branding) and export logistics to one of over 40 destinations worldwide. We share the list of influencing factors instead of one overall price, and we always include a delivery time frame with our quotation. FAQ
What is the minimum order for wholesale hair scissors?
Our in-stock styles ship in one piece so you can test drive the steel and edge yourself before committing. Custom and OEM orders start at 50 pieces – low, so growing brands and smaller distributors can offer their own private-label lines without five-figure buy-ins.
Can you private-label or OEM to my brand?
Yes. OEM/ODM is a core part of our business: your choice of steel, handle material, finish, color, engraved logo and packaging – approved against your pre-production sample prior to batch run.
Are these really Japanese steel if they are made in China?
We’re upfront: the steel is genuine, high-quality Japanese material (440C, VG10, ATS-314; with our ATS-314 sourced direct from Hitachi in Japan) and the blades are ground and hand-honed in our own factory in China. Barbers and stylists are coming around to the value of Chinese-made shears as long as the steel can be verified and the specifications published; what they are reacting to is Western marketing hiding unverified steel at a markup.
What hardness (HRC) are your blades, and why does it matter?
Our 440C and VG10 blades register at 60-61 HRC and the cobalt-alloyed line goes up to 64 HRC. This hardness, which comes from heat-treatment (not simply the name of the steel), is what determines how long the edge will hold up before a stylist starts feeling drag. We state it so you know what to expect.
What is a convex edge, and how is it different from a bevel edge?
A convex edge is hollow-ground for the smoothest possible sharpness, which enables clean slide-cutting and precise point cutting. A flat bevel edge, while cheaper to manufacture, has a tendency to catch and fold the hair on its facet. All premium Mackay blade shears are hand-honed to a convex edge.
What is the lead time on a wholesale or custom order?
Lead time will depend on grade, volume and custom degree – but you will get written, fixed lead times in every quotation, not ranges. In-stock styles go fastest; custom OEM runs start after your pre-production sample is approved.
Do you offer thinning, texturizing, left-handed and pet-grooming shears?
Yes. The catalog covers straight-cutting, thinning and texturizing shears (28-56 teeth), barber shears, and straight and curved pet/dog grooming shears – any model can be made left-handed or with a swivel thumb.
Which hair scissors can you supply wholesale and OEM?
As a wholesale hair scissors manufacturer, we supply the full professional range for haircutting professionals: professional hair cutting shears, professional hair cutting scissors, professional hairdressing scissors, hairdressing shears and professional hair shears, plus japanese steel hair scissors, hair thinning scissors and barber scissors japanese steel. Built for hairdressers and hairstylists who cut hair all day, each pair combines precision cutting with an ergonomic design and the quality scissors professionals expect — great quality held across the whole batch. Custom hair scissors, professional hair styling shears and full private-label lines round out the range. Buyers searching hair scissors manufacturer usa, japanese steel hair scissors wholesale or hair cutting shears professional order from the same documented catalog of professional hair scissors.
Can I get third-party test reports before I buy?
Yes, third-party hardness and material reports can be supplied. BSCI, ISO 9001 and SGS certifications are all documented.
